He wanted $200k.
They offered $180k.
He accepted immediately anyway…
Last week, one of my candidates received an $180k offer before equity.
We countered with $200k.
But the company said, "Sorry, $180k is our absolute maximum."
Instead of walking away, the candidate accepted on the spot.
Because before saying no, the CMO picked up the phone.
> He explained the budget constraints weren't about the candidate's worth.
> He offered a performance review at 4 months instead of the usual 12.
> He made it clear that he genuinely wanted this person on his team.
The candidate was impressed and felt valued.
"Those 15 minutes told me everything I need to know about their culture."
People don't expect perfection from employers.
They expect honesty and respect.
I can guarantee that this candidate would have declined if HR had emailed him to say, “take it or leave it”.
Great reminder that the conversation matters more than the number.
